Brasília – Six out of ten Basic Health Units (UBS) — the main entry point to Brazil’s Unified Health System (SUS) — require renovations to their physical infrastructure, according to the National UBS Census conducted by the Ministry of Health.

The survey covered approximately 45,000 primary health care (PHC) facilities, of which just over 27,000 (60.1%) reported the need for structural improvements. Among the most common issues identified:

  • 3,473 require wall repairs
  • 2,271 need ceiling repairs
  • 1,974 have plumbing problems
  • 2,495 require electrical work

The census also revealed that only 9% of UBS facilities perform electrocardiograms, highlighting disparities in access to diagnostic services at the primary care level.
