Brasília – President Lula (PT) has asked his cabinet for a comprehensive assessment of Brazil’s pharmaceutical sector, following President Donald Trump’s decision to impose an additional 40% tariff on products imported from Brazil — raising the total surcharge to 50%.

During a meeting with ministers on Thursday (31), Lula requested detailed information about medicines imported from the United States and the raw materials required for their production. According to officials present, the president also asked for data from various sectors of the economy, including energy, to evaluate potential countermeasures to the U.S. sanctions.

In the case of pharmaceuticals, Lula is exploring the possibility of sourcing drugs from other countries, even if those drugs are under U.S. patents. He also wants updated data on Brazil’s domestic drug manufacturing capacity.

Although the Reciprocity Law allows for the production of patented medicines in cases where economic threats are identified, officials say that invoking patent-breaking measures is not currently being considered.
