Brasília – A day after the United States revoked the visas of two Brazilians who worked on implementing the Mais Médicos program, the US Embassy in Brazil described the initiative as a “diplomatic coup” designed to exploit Cubans. The embassy also stated it will continue to hold “everyone” involved in the program accountable.

Allies of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) believe that former president Dilma Rousseff and current health minister Alexandre Padilha may have their access to the United States restricted in the future. According to a person familiar with the discussions, Padilha is already on the list of those whose visas were restricted, although the State Department did not confirm his name. Dilma’s status remains uncertain. The strategy, however, is to maintain pressure on Brazil.

Mais Médicos was launched in 2013 during Dilma’s presidency, when Padilha was also health minister. The US State Department told Folha de S.Paulo it would not disclose details about other individuals who may face sanctions.
