Brasília – The Ministry of Health’s new initiative, Agora Tem Especialistas, which aims to provide SUS patients with specialized care in private hospitals, has yet to move forward after its launch event on August 14 in Recife, attended by President Lula. At the ceremony, eight patients were treated, but since then, no further procedures have been carried out in private operators’ hospitals.

The program is designed to exchange R$ 1.3 billion per year in private health insurers’ debts for services to SUS patients. The ministry stated that the expansion will occur “as more private agents complete their enrollment,” but did not provide a timeline for when treatments in private hospitals will become routine.

The initiative is seen as a flagship project for Lula’s third term in health policy, but its implementation remains uncertain.
