Brasília – The Senate’s Social Affairs Committee (CAS) has established a Temporary Subcommittee on Cancer Prevention and Treatment. The body, chaired by Senator Dr. Eudócia (PL-AL) with Senator Dr. Hiran (PP-RR) as vice-chair, will operate for 180 days to develop legislative proposals and conduct public hearings on cancer prevention and treatment.
Senator Dr. Eudócia, who proposed the subcommittee, emphasized the rising incidence of cancer in Brazil and the need for public policies that enhance prevention, early diagnosis, and access to innovative therapies. She is also the author of Bill 126/2025, which aims to establish a regulatory framework for high-cost cancer vaccines and medications.
Senator Damares Alves (Republicanos-DF) shared her personal experience of rapid diagnosis and treatment following her own cancer diagnosis—highlighting the critical role of early detection. Senator Dr. Hiran cited his experience in Roraima with a Hospital de Amor unit and stressed the vital importance of implementing Law 14.758/2023, which governs Brazil’s national cancer prevention and control policy.
Senator Esperidião Amin (PP-SC) called for the subcommittee to explore new therapies, such as mRNA-based cancer vaccines, warning that Brazil must learn from global therapeutic advancements.
