Brasília – The Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) announced the launch of an artificial intelligence (AI) tool designed to actively track false medical specialists on social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook. The system is expected to go live in September.
The announcement was made by Jeancarlo Cavalcante, vice president of CFM and head of the council’s Artificial Intelligence Department, during the Afya Summit 2025 held in São Paulo on August 23. The event gathered around 1,500 professionals, both in person and online, to debate the future of medicine, including digital health, professional conduct on social media, and AI applications.
According to Cavalcante, Brazil is facing an “epidemic of false specialists,” and medical councils lack the capacity to monitor and hold them accountable without technological support. The tool, still unnamed, will compare names and claimed qualifications on social media with CFM’s official database, identifying both unregistered practitioners and professionals misrepresenting their specialties — for example, a doctor registered in internal medicine but falsely claiming to be a nutrition specialist.
This initiative is the first of four AI-based tools that CFM plans to introduce in the coming months. The move reflects growing regulatory efforts to ensure credibility and protect patients in an increasingly digital medical environment.
