Brasília – A recent Datafolha survey revealed that 96% of Brazilians believe newly graduated doctors should pass a proficiency exam before receiving their professional license (CRM). Only 3% oppose the exam, and 1% did not express an opinion.
Support was strong across regions, with Goiás showing the highest approval at 98% and the Acre the lowest at 92%. Furthermore, 98% of respondents said the exam should apply to all new doctors, regardless of whether they graduated from Brazilian or foreign institutions.
A total of 92% said the implementation of such a test would enhance public trust in medical services, while 94% believe it would positively impact both public and private healthcare in Brazil. The survey, conducted in June with 10,524 individuals across 254 municipalities, carries a 1-percentage-point margin of error.
The topic is now before Congress: Senate Bill PL 2.294/2024 is being debated in the Senate’s Social Affairs Committee, and House Bill PL 785/2024 awaits voting in the Chamber of Deputies. Both proposals envision making proficiency exams mandatory for medical licensure, with the CFM coordinating and regional medical councils administering them.
