Brasília – The Ministry of Health is preparing a national investment plan for medical equipment within Brazil’s public health system (SUS), aiming to modernize hospital infrastructure and strengthen the country’s technological capacity. The initiative seeks to organize equipment acquisition in a structured and long-term manner, replacing the current fragmented model of isolated purchases by states and municipalities.
According to Adriano Massuda, the ministry’s Executive Secretary, the plan will establish a multi-year investment strategy, prioritizing the renewal of essential devices and promoting industrial development in the national medical device sector. The model could follow an infrastructure-style approach, with predictable funding and strategic allocation across the health network.
Industry representatives, including ABIMO (Brazilian Association of Medical Devices), have welcomed the proposal, noting that more coordinated procurement can improve efficiency, transparency, and competitiveness. The government is also studying confidential procurement mechanisms for high-cost technologies, negotiated directly with the Federal Audit Court (TCU), to balance transparency and better pricing.
