Brasília – The HPV vaccine has shown a major impact on women’s health in Brazil. According to a new study by Fiocruz, vaccination against the human papillomavirus led to a 58% reduction in cervical cancer cases and up to 67% fewer severe precancerous lesions (CIN3) among young women.

Researchers analyzed data from the Unified Health System (SUS) between 2019 and 2023, covering more than 60 million women aged 20 to 24. The findings indicate that immunization — introduced years before the recommended age for screening — provides a level of protection beyond expectations, significantly reducing both incidence and disease progression.

The results reinforce the importance of expanding vaccination coverage for both girls and boys at the recommended ages and integrating HPV prevention into Brazil’s broader national cancer-control strategy. Experts highlight that strengthening immunization programs and awareness campaigns is essential to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem in the country.
