Brasília – The federal government outlined plans to expand the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in Brazil’s public services, with a focus on healthcare and basic education, during a hearing of the Senate’s Science and Technology Commission. The initiative is part of the Brazilian Artificial Intelligence Plan, which aims to modernize service delivery and improve efficiency in strategic areas by 2028.
According to government representatives, AI tools will help extend access to specialist medical services in remote regions and support adaptive learning in schools, reducing inequalities in access to healthcare and education. The plan also calls for stronger collaboration between ministries, states and the private sector to scale up digital infrastructure and integrate AI-driven solutions across public institutions.
Experts participating in the debate welcomed the government’s ambition but warned of key challenges, such as ensuring data privacy, guaranteeing algorithmic transparency, and preventing the reinforcement of social inequalities through biased or poorly supervised systems. They recommended the establishment of governance frameworks, pilot projects and ethical guidelines to ensure AI deployment benefits all segments of society.
