Brasília – The House of Representatives held a solemn session on October 20 to mark the International Pink October campaign focused on the prevention and early diagnosis of breast cancer. The event was proposed by Congresswomen Benedita da Silva (PT-RJ), Flávia Morais (PDT-GO), Laura Carneiro (PSD-RJ) and Congressman Odair Cunha (PT-MG).
Congresswoman Laura Carneiro described the date as a “call to action for life,” emphasizing that every woman, regardless of income or region, must have access to mammograms and proper treatment. Congresswoman Flávia Morais underscored the need for year-round public policies for women’s health, noting that early diagnosis saves lives but requires stronger public networks and consistent investment in prevention.
The event also featured representatives from civil-society organizations such as Femama and Instituto Oncoguia, who stressed the importance of psychological support and the challenges faced by marginalized women in accessing timely care. The director of the Department of Cancer Care at the Ministry of Health, José Barreto Campello Carvalheira, stated that ensuring timely diagnosis and treatment remains the country’s greatest challenge, particularly in the North and Northeast regions.
