Brasília – The Ministry of Health has launched a nationwide training program to prepare public health professionals for the introduction of the etonogestrel subdermal implant (Implanon) in Brazil’s Unified Health System (SUS). More than 2,000 professionals — including doctors, nurses, managers and representatives from Indigenous Health Districts — will participate in eight-hour workshops combining theoretical instruction and practical exercises using anatomical simulators.
The first training session took place in Salvador (Bahia), and the program will be expanded to all states and the Federal District by the end of 2025. The training covers proper insertion and removal of the implant, patient counseling and guidance on long-acting reversible contraception, as well as integration with other contraceptive methods available through SUS.
The Ministry of Health has also begun distributing the first 200,000 Implanon units to states, prioritizing regions with high social vulnerability and elevated adolescent pregnancy rates. The goal is to deliver 1.8 million units by 2026, with 500,000 expected to be distributed this year. The initiative follows a positive evaluation by the National Committee for Health Technology Incorporation (Conitec) and aims to expand women’s access to safe, effective and long-term contraceptive options.
