Brasília – A new survey reveals that 64% of Brazilian men aged 22 to 45 are unaware that infection with the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) can cause cancer. The study, which included participants from all regions of the country, also found that fewer than half of respondents know that regular screening can detect the virus, and 45% still believe condom use alone provides complete protection.
Experts emphasize that HPV is highly prevalent — about one in five men over 15 is infected with a high-risk strain — and that the virus is linked to several types of cancer, including penile, anal, and oropharyngeal tumors. The findings highlight the need to strengthen vaccination campaigns and expand education initiatives targeting men to reduce infection and disease burden.
