Brasília – The patent for the direct oral anticoagulant Apixaban expires, paving the way for generics and triggering expectations of significant price reductions in Brazil’s health-care market. The medication, widely used to prevent strokes in atrial fibrillation and to treat deep-vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, is poised to transition from branded exclusivity to broader competition.
With the market opening up, the cost of a monthly supply currently priced between R$ 180 and 300 could drop by 40 % to 60 %, potentially lowering it to around R$ 80 per box. This shift promises increased accessibility for patients and budget relief for the public health system.
