Brasília – The Ministry of Health delivered an initial batch of 2.109 million units of insulin glargine, produced with national technology, to the Brazilian Public Health System (SUS) for treatment of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The advance comes via a Productive Development Partnership (PDP) between the public manufacturer Bio-Manguinhos (a unit of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation) and biotech company Biomm, signalling a strategic shift toward national manufacturing and reduced dependence on imports.
The initiative includes a total investment of R$ 131.8 million for 2025, and promises further deliveries of 4.7 million units by year-end. As part of the same PDP, Brazil will also produce the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) domestically — a first in Latin America for this insulin class. The long-term goal is an annual production capacity of some 70 million units, reinforcing industrial sovereignty within the Economic-Industrial Health Complex.
