Brasília – The Senate plenary approved on November 26 the bill guaranteeing the right to mammography under the Unified Health System (SUS) for all women aged 40 and over. The proposal — PL 499/2025, authored by Plínio Valério and reported by Damares Alves — modifies the current law (Lei 11.664/2008), which until now limited regular mammogram screening by SUS to women between 50 and 69 years old.

Under the approved text, women starting at 40 will have the right to request mammography via SUS, with frequency to be defined by the guidelines of the Ministério da Saúde. The change aims to expand access to early detection of breast cancer, recognizing that a significant portion of cases are diagnosed in younger women — a move that could improve prognosis and reduce mortality.
