Brasília – Novo Nordisk submitted a request to Anvisa for the approval of a new 7.2 mg formulation of Wegovy, a semaglutide-based medication used for the treatment of obesity. The new dose is three times higher than the currently approved 2.4 mg version and is intended for adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above. According to the company, the expanded dose aims to increase therapeutic effectiveness and offer an additional option for patients who require greater weight-loss support.

Clinical trial data show that the 7.2 mg dose achieved higher average weight reduction compared with the 2.4 mg dose, with more patients reaching clinically significant thresholds of weight loss. The safety profile remained consistent with previous findings for semaglutide, with gastrointestinal events as the most common adverse reactions. Novo Nordisk has also submitted similar applications to regulatory agencies in the United States and Europe.
