Brasília – The Senate’s Committee on Social Affairs (CAS) approved the creation of Profimed, a mandatory national proficiency exam for newly graduated physicians seeking professional registration. The proposal, authored by Senator Marcos Pontes, aims to establish a uniform standard of clinical competence and ethical practice across the country. The exam would be administered twice a year and coordinated by the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM).

The bill’s rapporteur, Senator Dr. Hiran, argued that the measure is necessary due to the rapid and uneven expansion of medical schools, many of which lack adequate training structure. Senator Rogério Carvalho opposed the proposal in its current form, stating that responsibility for such an exam should lie with the Ministry of Education rather than professional councils. The bill will now proceed to consideration by the Chamber of Deputies.
