Brasília – The National Supplementary Health Agency (ANS) has approved the inclusion of robot-assisted radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer in the Mandatory Coverage List (Rol de Procedimentos e Eventos em Saúde) of private health plans. The decision, following a recommendation from the National Committee for Health Technology Incorporation (Conitec), will take effect in April 2026, giving the sector six months to adapt to the new requirement.

The procedure — considered the most advanced surgical option for prostate cancer — offers greater precision, reduces blood loss and shortens hospital stays compared with traditional techniques, potentially improving functional outcomes for patients. ANS leadership characterized the move as an important step in modernizing Brazil’s supplementary health system and expanding access to high-complexity oncology technologies, even as challenges remain in expanding robotic surgery infrastructure beyond major regional centers.
