Brasília – The state of São Paulo reached 197,000 registered physicians in 2025, marking a 66% increase over the last decade, according to a new survey. The data reflect growth in both specialists and general practitioners, attributed to expanded medical school openings, retention policies and investments in healthcare training across the region. Health officials noted that while the rising number of doctors may enhance access to medical services, distribution remains uneven, with higher concentrations in metropolitan areas compared with interior and rural communities.

The survey also highlighted trends in physician demographics, including increases in female practitioners and shifts in specialty preferences. Stakeholders said that improving workforce distribution and strengthening primary care networks continue to be priorities for health systems aiming to expand equitable access to healthcare throughout the state.
