Brasília – A new long-term analysis of the dengue vaccine developed by the Butantan Institute shows that the single-dose immunization maintains protection for at least five years and significantly reduces severe cases of the disease. The findings come from a phase 3 clinical trial follow-up involving more than 16,000 participants aged 2 to 59 in Brazil and were published in the scientific journal Nature Medicine.

According to the study, the vaccine demonstrated 65% efficacy against symptomatic dengue confirmed by laboratory tests and 80.5% protection against severe dengue or cases with warning signs after five years of monitoring. Researchers also reported effectiveness both in individuals previously infected with dengue and in those without prior exposure, reinforcing the vaccine’s potential to reduce hospitalizations and deaths associated with the disease.
